Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old at Long Beach in California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly became enthralled when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art can be a powerful vehicle for activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was socially conscious and taught her to say something through the arts. Although DuVernay grew up within Compton with her parents, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed a documentary about King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then look through their trash. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay got a job right out college, as a young publicist for a studio. She was hired in 1999 and launched her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
